AT CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE

The World Premiere Will Run September 10 Through October 8, 2017

 

Center Theatre Group has announced the casting for the world premiere of Paul Rudnick’s new play “Big Night.” Directed by Tony winner Walter Bobbie (“Chicago” and “Bright Star”), “Big Night” begins previews September 10, opens September 16 and continues through October 8, 2017, at the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

The cast includes, in alphabetical order, Brian Hutchinson (“Smokefall” Off-Broadway), Max Jenkins (NBC’s “The Mysteries of Laura”), Luke Macfarlane (ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters”), Wendie Malick (NBC’s “Just Shoot Me!”) and Tom Phelan (ABC Family’s “The Fosters”). One more cast member will be announced at a later date.

The creative team includes set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by William Ivey Long and lighting design by Ken Billington. Casting is by James Calleri, CSA and Paul Davis, CSA and Brooke Baldwin is the production stage manager. The sound designer will be announced at a later date.

It is the night of the Oscars and a working actor turned Oscar nominee knows that his life is about to change – he just doesn’t know how profoundly. His transgender nephew has plans for his speech, his young agent has plans for his future, his unstoppable mother has plans for the catering and his partner is nowhere to be found. Master satirist Paul Rudnick blends a deep humanity with a honed sense of hilarity in this powerful and funny play about family and fame, the personal and the political, and the drive to stand up and speak out.

Paul Rudnick is a playwright, novelist, essayist and screenwriter, whom The New York Times has called “one of our pre-eminent humorists.” His plays have been produced both on and Off-Broadway and include “I Hate Hamlet,” “Jeffrey,” “The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told,” “Regrets Only” and “The New Century.” He’s won an Obie Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards and the John Gassner Playwriting Award. Rudnick’s novels include “Social Disease” and “I’ll Take It,” both from Knopf. He’s a regular contributor to The New Yorker and his articles and essays have appeared in Vanity Fair, Esquire, Vogue and The New York Times. HarperCollins published his “Collected Plays” and a book of essays entitled “I Shudder.” He’s rumored to be quite close to Premiere magazine’s film critic, Libby Gelman-Waxner, whose collected columns were published under the title “If You Ask Me.” His screenplays include “Addams Family Values,” the screen adaptation of “Jeffrey” and “In & Out.”

Center Theatre Group’s “Soft Power” Begins

Center Theatre Group will partner with East West Players on the upcoming world premiere of “Soft Power” at the Ahmanson Theatre May 3 through June 10, 2018, announced Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. Through the partnership, East West Players will add this new work created by Tony Award-winning artists David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori as part of its 2017-2018 Season and will also collaborate with Center Theatre Group on four Community Conversations leading up to the play’s premiere as part of the Ahmanson Theatre’s 2017-2018 Season.

“When we started talking with our colleagues at East West Players about ways to collaborate, we quickly realized that ‘Soft Power’ was the perfect opportunity for us to continue a tradition of artistic partnership by bringing our audiences together once again for a unique new work from David Henry Hwang,” said Ritchie. “The last time we partnered was on ‘Yellow Face’ at the Mark Taper Forum, so it’ll be great to have East West Players’ subscribers join us in another fascinating journey into David’s imagination, this time at the Ahmanson.”

“It is an honor to partner with Center Theatre Group on the world premiere of David Henry Hwang’s ‘Soft Power,’” said Snehal Desai, East West Players’ Producing Artistic Director. “As the playwright that is the namesake of our theatre and whose work East West Players has produced more than any other, David’s prescience and ability to turn a mirror not only to our world as it is, but also where we are heading never ceases to astonish. With this production, our relationship with Center Theatre Group will continue to deepen as we initiate a series of joint Community Conversations on Asian American representation and storytelling. East West Players’ 52nd season is dedicated to community and partnerships, and we are proud to include Center Theatre Group as part of ‘The Company We Keep.’”

The four joint Community Conversations are scheduled to take place on October 26, 2017, January 18, 2018, March 15, 2018 and June 5, 2018. Locations, topics and panelists will be announced at a later date. Center Theatre Group’s Community Conversations are a series of panel discussions free and open to the public that feature local thought leaders in dialogue about the context, issues and ideas finding voice on our stages.

“The Community Conversations are that moment when we ask people in our community to help us make relevant the themes and ideas that are alive on our stage,” said Leslie K. Johnson, Center Theatre Group’s Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact. “Asking thought leaders to come and spark that conversation is exciting. By inviting them into the room, we are able to hear someone who lives these topics every day discuss them in the context of the show.”

“Soft Power” begins as a contemporary play before jumping 100 years into the future and exploding into a Chinese musical about present-day America. This seductive new work has book and lyrics by Hwang and music by Tesori. A beloved East-meets-West musical, China’s 21st-century rise and a Presidential candidate’s fundraiser collide to make mayhem—and some beautiful music. This show is inspired by the West’s often ridiculously inauthentic portrayals of Asia, and China’s quest for world cultural influence, also known as “Soft Power.”

“Soft Power,” directed by Leigh Silverman with choreography by Sam Pinkleton, is a Center Theatre Group commission and marks the first collaboration between Hwang and Tesori.

Phylicia Rashad Returns to the Taper in Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Piercing New Play

 

Center Theatre Group has announced the cast for “Head of Passes” by Oscar winner and playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney. Directed by Tina Landau and featuring Tony winner Phylicia Rashad, “Head of Passes” begins previews September 13, opens September 24 and continues through October 22, 2017, at the Mark Taper Forum.

Joining the previously announced Rashad, the cast includes, in alphabetical order, Alana Arenas, Francois Battiste, Kyle Beltran, J. Bernard Calloway, James Carpenter, John Earl Jelks and Jacqueline Williams.

The creative team includes scenic design by G.W. Mercier, costume design by Toni-Leslie James, lighting design by Jeff Croiter and sound design by Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen. The production stage manager is David S. Franklin.

Family and friends are gathering to celebrate Shelah’s (Rashad) birthday under the leaky roof of her home at the mouth of the Mississippi River. But an unwanted birthday party and unrelenting rains are only the first challenges in this contemporary parable inspired by the Book of Job in which unexpected events turn the reunion into the ultimate test of faith and love. As her world seems to collapse around her, Shelah must fight to survive the rising flood of life’s greatest challenges in this poetic and piercing new play.

Casting has been announced for the Los Angeles engagement of the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning hit musical “Jersey Boys,” the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, previewing May 16 and 17, opening May 18 and continuing through June 24, 2017, at Center Theatre Group / Ahmanson Theatre.

Mark Ballas will reprise his hit Broadway performance as Frankie Valli for the Los Angeles engagement of the tour. Ballas, known for his Emmy nominated work on “Dancing with the Stars,” made his Broadway debut in the role last fall (October 18, 2016 – January 15, 2017). Critically acclaimed ‘Frankie veterans’ Aaron De Jesus and Miguel Jarquin-Moreland will play Frankie Valli at certain performances during the week. The cast of “Jersey Boys” will also feature Matthew Dailey (Tommy DeVito), Keith Hines (Nick Massi) and Cory Jeacoma (Bob Gaudio) as The Four Seasons, with Barry Anderson and Thomas Fiscella.

The ensemble of “Jersey Boys” includes Mark Edwards, Corey Greenan, Bryan Hindle, David LaMarr, Austin Owen, Kristen Paulicelli, Leslie Rochette, Andrew Russell, Jenna Nicole Schoen, Dru Serkes, Jonny Wexler and Jesse Wildman.

“Jersey Boys” is the behind-the-music story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. They were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first note. SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2017, AT THE MUSIC CENTER ANNEX

Free Workshops, College Counseling and More Offered to High School Students

Center Theatre Group invites current high school students, parents and teachers to attend the second annual “College & Career Fair for the Arts” on Saturday, April 22, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at The Music Center Annex located at 601 W. Temple St. in Downtown L.A. Center Theatre Group will also be hosting the previously announced “Going Pro Career Fair” for college and university students on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at East Los Angeles College. Both events will give students the opportunity to explore education and career opportunities in the arts.

Center Theatre Group’s “College & Career Fair for the Arts” is intended to help students navigate the transition from high school to college, and learn more about careers in the arts. More than 30 colleges, universities and organizations will be in attendance including the University of Southern California (USC), the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Fashion Careers International and more. The fair will include free workshops, a food truck with free lunch (12 to 2 p.m.) and opportunities for one-on-one college counseling and personal statement help.

The free workshops will give students the opportunity to learn about the college application process and what admissions staff are looking for; the FAFSA (Federal Application for Student Aid), student loans, scholarships and financial aid; and hear from professional theatre artists across the field, from designers to actors. Workshops are open to students only.

The complete cast has been announced for the acclaimed Fiasco Theater production of “Into the Woods” opening April 5th 2017, at the Center Theatre Group / Ahmanson Theatre and playing through May 14th 2017, with one preview performance on April 4. This celebrated new production of the Tony Award-winning musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, is directed by Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld.

CENTER THEATRE GROUP TO HOLD MEMORIAL IN HONOR OF GORDON DAVIDSON
MONDAY, JANUARY 9th 2017, AT 7:30 P.M. AT THE AHMANSON THEATRE

Center Theatre Group will hold a memorial in honor of its Founding Artistic Director, Gordon Davidson, on Monday, January 9th 2017, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Ahmanson Theatre. The theatre will open at 7 p.m. The memorial will not be a ticketed event and will be open to the public. (Free admission) Additional details will be released at a later date.

“Gordon Davidson was one of the most renowned and respected artistic directors in regional theatre, in part because he was one of the original founders of the entire concept,” said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “He led Center Theatre Group for 38 years and produced one of the broadest arrays of plays, particularly new plays, of any theatre in the country. Without his prolific vision for Center Theatre Group 50 years ago, the theatrical landscape in Los Angeles, and the country, would be very different. He remains one of theatre’s great leaders and I am proud to call him a mentor, friend and colleague.”

From 1967 to 2005 Gordon Davidson was the Artistic Director of the Center Theatre Group / Mark Taper Forum at The Music Center. Davidson was also the Producing Director of the Center Theatre Group / Ahmanson Theatre for 15 years, and the Artistic Director of the inaugural season (2004-2005) at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. In addition to redefining theatre in Southern California, he was one of the founders of the regional theatre movement and had a permanent impact on theatre throughout the country and the world.

Gordon guided hundreds of productions to the Taper stage while overseeing numerous special projects sponsored by the Taper. This work, and his direction of many plays staged at the Taper, were acclaimed both in Los Angeles and New York, garnering the Taper a Tony Award for theatrical excellence in 1977.

Gordon was born on May 7, 1933, and passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Judi; their children, Adam and Rachel; and five granddaughters.

Residency is Part of Center Theatre Group’s Annual August Wilson Program

 

Center Theatre Group has selected four local high school teachers from three different high schools in Los Angeles to participate in the 2017 August Wilson In-School Residency Program. The in-school residency is a semester-long program that provides students with an in-depth study of the work of prolific African American playwright August Wilson and provides opportunities for them to discover their own creative voices.

The participating teachers are Damiek Barrow from Washington Preparatory High School in Los Angeles, Melanie Dubose and Juan Perez from East Los Angeles Performing Arts Magnet in Los Angeles and Craig Robinson from Animo Leadership Charter High School in Inglewood.

The four selected teachers will each partner with a Center Theatre Group Teaching Artist as they deliver curriculum related to one of August Wilson’s plays during 15 in-class sessions spanning four months. In addition to the in-class sessions, the four teachers will participate in two full-day team building meetings to plan and evaluate the curriculum, practice new skills related to the art form and exchange ideas.

Program, which also includes the August Wilson Monologue Competition (AWMC). AWMC is an annual monologue competition hosted in cities throughout the country, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Dallas and Greensboro, North Carolina and is designed to provide intensive learning opportunities for high school students to study and practice the craft of acting, specifically through monologue performances. Furthermore, the classrooms selected for the in-school residency will attend the August Wilson Monologue Competition Los Angeles Regional Finals at the Mark Taper Forum as part of their residency experience, witnessing the power of theatre as their peers bring August Wilson’s characters to life.

“These programs are part of our tradition of nurturing new voices in the American theatre,” said Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson. “They enable students from all walks of life to discover August Wilson’s profound and deeply relevant works of art, explore their own creative voices, and learn more about our shared history and themselves.”

This is Center Theatre Group’s sixth year serving as facilitator of the August Wilson In-School Residency program, as well as the Southern California home to the AWMC.
CTG honors its long-standing relationship with August Wilson through its August Wilson Program, as well as through its continued production of Wilson’s work. CTG has presented nine of Wilson’s plays, including two world premiere productions of his work. In September/October 2016, Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” had a successful run at the Mark Taper Forum.

Tony-Winning Director Garry Hynes Returns to Martin McDonagh’s Classic Play with Original Cast Member Marie Mullen

Center Theatre Group has announced the casting for the Druid production of “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” by Martin McDonagh. Directed by Druid artistic director Garry Hynes, “Beauty Queen” begins previews November 9, opens November 16 and continues through December 18, 2016, at Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum.

The cast includes, in alphabetical order, Aaron Monaghan, Marie Mullen, Aisling O’Sullivan and Marty Rea. Mullen, who played the daughter Maureen in the original 1996 production and earned a Tony Award for her performance, will now play the role of Maureen’s mother Mag; O’Sullivan will play Maureen; Rea will play Pato; and Monaghan will play Ray.

The design team includes Francis O’Connor for sets and costumes, James F. Ingalls for lighting, Greg Clarke for sound. Paddy Cunneen is the composer and Bryan Burroughs is fight director.

“Beauty Queen,” which is set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, is the tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early 40s, and Mag, her manipulative, aging mother, whose interference in Maureen’s first and potentially last romantic relationship sets in motion a chain of events that are as tragically funny as they are horrific.

Peter Marks of The Washington Post said of McDonagh, “Please avail yourself, and brace yourself, for the virtuosic turbulence of one of modern theater’s most giddily diabolical minds.”

“McDonagh’s writing is a tightrope act of unnerving skill and maturity,” said John Peter of London’s Sunday Times. Benedict Nightingale, writing for The New York Times, said, “[Martin McDonagh is] the most wickedly funny, brilliantly abrasive young dramatist on either side of the Irish Sea.”

Hynes won a Tony Award for her direction of “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” on Broadway in 1998. She also directed McDonagh’s “The Cripple of Inishmaan” at Center Theatre Group’s Kirk Douglas Theatre in 2011, as well as Arthur Miller’s “The Price” at the Taper in 2015. Center Theatre Group presented McDonagh’s “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” at the Taper in 2010.

McDonagh is an award-winning writer and director. His work with Druid includes “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” “A Skull in Connemara,” “The Lonesome West” (Druid/Royal Court/Broadway) and “The Cripple of Inishmaan” (Druid/Atlantic Theater Company/U.S. Tour).
Other theatre includes “The Cripple of Inishmaan” (National Theatre, London/West End/Broadway), “The Pillowman” (National Theatre, London/Broadway), “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” (RSC/Garrick/Broadway), “A Behanding in Spokane” (Broadway) and “Hangmen” (Royal Court). His film work (as a writer/director) includes “Six Shooter” (a short), “In Bruges” and “Seven Psychopaths.” His awards include the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy (“The Lieutenant of Inishmore”), Olivier Award for Best New Play (“The Pillowman”), Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film (“Six Shooter”), BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay (“In Bruges”).

The production is currently touring Ireland starting in Galway, where the Druid Theatre Company was founded in 1975. The Taper run will be the first U.S. engagement in the tour. Subsequent tour dates will be announced at a later date.

“Throw Me on the Burnpile…” Will Play Through Oct. 2

The world premiere of “Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up,” written and performed by the Oscar-nominated Lucy Alibar (Best Adapted Screenplay for “Beasts of the Southern Wild”), opened on Friday, September 16 at 8 p.m. “Throw Me on the Burnpile…” will continue through October 2, 2016, at Center Theatre Group’s Kirk Douglas Theatre.

Directed by Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director Neel Keller, “Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up” blends a lecherous goat, Pentecostals on the radio, a clutter of inbred cats, phone calls from death row, Daddy’s burnpile and countless other rich ingredients into a delicious and magical stew of stories about a singular childhood in Grady County, Florida.

CTG Marks 13 Seasons at the Douglas and 50 Years in Los Angeles Five World Premieres and an American Premiere Set for the Douglas Plus the Launch of the Block Party Celebration Featuring Three Plays Selected From Among the Best Recent L.A. Productions

The New Season Begins September 10, 2016, and Runs Through August 6, 2017.

Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie has set the 2016-2017 Season at the CTG/Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City.

“This is an exciting season of firsts,” said Ritchie. “We have filled our 13th season at the Douglas with premieres – five world premieres and one American premiere.
“And, as we celebrate Center Theatre Group’s 50 years of creating theatre in Los Angeles, we also want to turn the spotlight on some of the remarkable work being done on the other stages throughout L.A. with our inaugural Block Party featuring three plays chosen from the many amazing works done by our fellow theatre companies over the last two years.

“Looking back into our recent past, in 2015, DouglasPlus audiences got a glimpse into the fantastic world of Lucy Alibar’s Southern childhood when we presented ‘Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up’ as a work in progress. Now she is ready to premiere her truly unique coming of age story and we are thrilled to have it on our stage.”
“We also welcome back award-winning playwright Jon Robin Baitz for his seventh production at CTG and third world premiere with the politically charged ‘Vicuña,’” said Ritchie, “as well as Tim Crouch whose ‘Adler & Gibb’ looks at the artists behind the art and promises to be as inciting as his immersive play ‘The Author’ that rocked DouglasPlus audiences in 2011.

“Celebrated playwright Lauren Yee will join us for the first time with her funny, touching and very personal play, ‘King of the Yees,’ which places her family center stage.
Writer/co-director Deborah Stein and co-director/performer Suli Holum will also join us for the first time with a stunningly inventive work, ‘The Wholehearted,’ featuring performance and video with rockabilly and country music to tell the story of a female boxing champion and her battles outside of the ring.”

“We will celebrate a new voice in the theatre with the first play by actress and now playwright Ngozi Anyanwu,” said Ritchie. “Her ‘Good Grief’ explores the difficult journey to adulthood. I am proud to bring her new work to life at the Douglas and look forward to more work from this talented writer.
“It is a season that continues the growing tradition of bold, theatrically adventurous plays that have come to define the Kirk Douglas Theatre. I have always strived to present
the widest possible range of theatrical experiences. This season features plays from internationally renowned theatre artists and emerging local voices. Stories will reveal themselves in the privacy of a childhood bedroom and under the bright spotlight of a national election. We are collaborating with theatres across the country, the globe and just across town to bring theatre that will engross, challenge and entertain our audiences.”

The 2016-2017 season at the Douglas is part of Center Theatre Group’s 50th anniversary that includes the previously announced 2016-2017 season at the Ahmanson Theatre and the 2017 season at the Mark Taper Forum, which will be announced this summer. Both the Taper and the Ahmanson are part of The Music Center of Los Angeles County and are the theatres where Center Theatre Group began in 1967. Center Theatre Group added the Kirk Douglas Theatre in 2004.

Lucy Alibar’s plays have been produced or developed at the National Theatre Studio in London, Joe’s Pub, the Ojai Playwrights Conference, Berkeley Rep Ground Floor, Williamstown Theatre Festival, HERE Arts Center, Ensemble Studio Theatre, the Avignon Festival, Women Center Stage at Classic Stage Company and the Cherry Lane Theatre. Her first movie, “Beasts of the Southern Wild” (an adaptation with Benh Zeitlin of her stage play “Juicy and Delicious”), received the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, the Cannes Film Festival Caméra d’Or and earned Alibar nominations for BAFTA, Oscar and a Scripter Awards. She is a Sundance Screenwriting Fellow, a two-time finalist for the Heideman Award at Actors Theatre of Louisville and finalist for the O’Neill Playwrights Conference.
Lucy is an alumni of the Obie Award-winning Youngblood and cofounder of the New Georges Writer/Director Lab.

As the 2016 election cycle reaches its fevered peak, Tony nominee and Pulitzer finalist Jon Robin Baitz dives into the debate with the world premiere of “Vicuña,” October 23 through November 20, 2016. The opening is set for October 30.
Directed by Robert Egan, “Vicuña” delves beneath the overstitching, through the weave and into the true power of the power suit. A suit may or may not make the man but it definitely reveals him – offering the world a glimpse of his taste, judgement and intelligence. Influenced by the evolving political landscape, Baitz’s new play focuses on a brash candidate on the rise and the world-renowned tailor who just might have the final piece needed to clinch the election.

“Vicuña” will be the seventh play by Jon Robin Baitz to be presented by Center Theatre Group and the third to receive its world premiere with CTG. Past productions at the Taper include “Dutch Landscape” (world premiere), “The Substance of Fire,” “Three Hotels,” “Ten Unknowns” and “Other Desert Cities.” “The Paris Letter” received its world premiere at Kirk Douglas Theatre. Baitz’s other plays include “The Film Society,” “The End of the Day,” “A Fair Country,” “Mizlansky/Zilinsky,” and a new version of Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler” (for Broadway starring Kate Burton). He is a Pulitzer Prize finalist for “A Fair Country” and “Other Desert Cities” and a Guggenheim, NEA and American Academy of Arts & Letters Award winner. His screenplays include “The Substance of Fire” and “People I Know” starring Al Pacino. Baitz created the drama series “Brothers & Sisters” in 2006, after writing an episode of “The West Wing” (“The Long Goodbye”).

Stein | Holum Projects’ engrossing one-woman show “The Wholehearted” is presented as part of DouglasPlus, December 2 – 11, 2016, with opening set for December 3.
Written and co-directed by Deborah Stein and performed and co-directed by Suli Holum with original songs by Obie Award-winning composer and sound designer James Sugg, the world premiere production is produced in association with La Jolla Playhouse.
Set in a boxing gym where female boxing phenom Dee Crosby is preparing for a whole new fight, “The Wholehearted” looks past the neatly-packaged Cinderella stories of sports coverage into the real world of a woman grappling with lost love and an abusive husband. “The Wholehearted” blends music, video and physicality into a singular theatrical experience that Don Aucoin of the Boston Globe called, “a boldly arresting work, elevated its pervasive and skillful use of video and by Holum’s alternately brooding and explosive portrayal of Dee.”

Stein | Holum Projects (SHP) is the creative partnership of playwright/director Deborah Stein and performer/director Suli Holum. Drawing on over a decade of experience in both experimental and regional theatre, SHP works with a core group of accomplished designers to create a unique hybrid of the highly visual and dexterously verbal; interdisciplinary physical theatre with complex and nuanced characters. Their first play, “Chimera,” premiered at HERE as part of Under the Radar and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance.

Suli Holum is a founder and former Co-Artistic Director of Pig Iron Theatre Company where she established herself as a collaborative playmaker. With diverse training that includes Lecoq, Viewpoints, puppetry and various dance forms, Holum creates work that is highly physical and transformative. Her off-Broadway acting credits include “Hot ‘n’ Throbbing,” “Courting Vampires,” “Live Girls,” “Lebensraum” (Drama Desk Award) and regionally she appeared in “Born Yesterday”(Helen Hayes nomination) at Arena Stage. She is a recipient of a 2010 TCG Fox Resident Actor Fellowship.

Deborah Stein’s other plays include “Heist!” (Actors Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival commission), “God Save Gertrude” (Workhaus Collective, Theatre @ Boston Court), “Wallflower” (Stages Repertory Theatre) and “Bone Portraits” (Stillpoint Productions). Deborah has created collaborative original work with artists such as Joseph Chaikin, Dominique Serrand and Lear deBessonet. Since 2000 she has collaborated on six original works with Pig Iron Theatre Company, for which she received three Barrymore Award nominations.

Co-commissioned by Center Theatre Group with the Royal Court Theatre in London, the American premiere of “Adler & Gibb” will be presented as part of DouglasPlus, January 17 – 29, 2017, and opens January 18, at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. “Adler & Gibb” is written by Tim Crouch and directed by Crouch, Andy Smith and Karl James.
“Adler & Gibb” tells the fictional story of Janet Adler and Margaret Gibb, legendary boundary-pushing conceptual artists working in New York late last century. When they abruptly step away from the limelight at the height of their careers, the mysterious move only adds fuel to their fame.
When “Adler & Gibb” opened at the Royal Court Theatre in London, Paul Taylor of The Independent said, “… an evening that starts off with the air of a studied prank becomes emotionally piercing …” calling the production “memorable and rewarding. …”
And Andrzej Lukowski of Time Out London raved, “At its best, this hilarious, harrowing and maddening interrogation of the value of art explodes with fearless intent and piercing intelligence … Tim Crouch has earned his place in the contemporary theatre pantheon.”
Tim Crouch returns to the Kirk Douglas Theatre where his searing and immersive play “The Author” was presented as part of DouglasPlus in 2011. His other plays include Obie Award-winning “An Oak Tree” (Odyssey Theatre), “My Arm,” “ENGLAND” (a play for galleries), “what happens to the hope at the end of the evening” and “I, Malvolio.” Tim works with a number of associates and collaborators to produce his writing. Organizations that have been involved more deeply in the work – through commission or co-production – include the Royal Court Theatre, the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, the British Council, Brighton Festival, Singapore Arts Festival, Culturgest in Lisbon, Warwick Arts Centre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

Good Grief

Winner of the 2016 Humanitas/Center Theatre Group Playwriting Prize, Ngozi Anyanwu’s “Good Grief” has its world premiere at the Douglas from February 26 to March 26, 2017, and opens March 5. Directed by Patricia McGregor, this is the first of Anyanwu’s plays to receive a full professional production.

“Good Grief” follows Nkechi (played by Anyanwu), a good Nigerian-American girl frozen in her own coming of age story. When tragedy strikes on an unplanned break from college, she retreats into her childhood home and reexamines the many steps she’s taken on the way to adulthood, from first crush, to missed connections to the struggles of a first generation girl blending in to her suburban Pennsylvania reality.
Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

A recent graduate of the University of California San Diego’s MFA acting program, Ngozi Anyanwu is an actress, writer, producer and director. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre from Point Park University and performed at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre, Barrington Stage, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater and the Mark Taper Forum.
Anyanwu is the founder and one of the original members of the 1st Generation Nigerian Project where she served as Artistic Director and wrote and performed along with several other amazing Nigerian-American female artists under the direction of John Gould Rubin (Bank Street Theatre, Women Center Stage Festival). She now serves as Co-Artistic Director of Now Africa’s Playwrights Festival. She has directed “She Gon Learn,” by Lisa Strum for the Emerging Arts Festival and for the United Solo Festival. She has also served as assistant director at Intar (Unit 52) and under Eve Best with Old Vic New Voices.

Block Party:
Celebrating Los Angeles Theatre

Drawing upon the rich local theatre community, Block Party: Celebrating Los Angeles Theatre at the Kirk Douglas Theatre will be presented over six weeks, April 14 – May 21, 2017.

Los Angeles is home to over 250 theatre companies, featuring an abundance of talent, diversity and ingenuity. Center Theatre Group is tapping into this deep pool of artists to create the inaugural Block Party – a selection of three recent productions from local theatre companies, highlighting some of the best work the city has to offer.

Center Theatre Group has a long history of pairing with local theatre companies including the Deaf West production of “Big River” which was produced at the Mark Taper Forum in 2003 and went on to Broadway before returning to the Ahmanson Theatre in 2005 as part of a national tour. More recently, Center Theatre Group partnered with Ebony Repertory Theatre for the remounting of “A Raisin in the Sun” (which played at the Douglas in conversation with the play’s sequel/prequel “Clybourne Park” and was presented simultaneously at the Taper), 24th STreet Theatre’s “Walking the Tightrope” (also at the Douglas) and other productions around the city such as “The Behavior of Broadus” (with Burglars of Hamm and Sacred Fools Theater Company) and “Birder” (with the Road Theatre Company).

Theatre companies from the greater Los Angeles area are invited to submit shows that have been produced in the past two years for Block Party. Applications are being accepted through August 12, 2016, and the chosen productions will be announced in the fall.

The 2016-2017 season at the Kirk Douglas Theatre concludes with the world premiere production of Lauren Yee’s bitingly funny and heartbreakingly honest new play, “King of the Yees.” Directed by Joshua Kahan Brody and produced in association with
Goodman Theatre, Yee’s hilarious romp through her own history runs July 9 through August 6, 2017. The opening is set for July 16.

For nearly 20 years, playwright Lauren Yee’s father Larry has been a driving force in the Yee Family Association, a seemingly obsolescent Chinese American men’s club formed 150 years ago in the wake of the Gold Rush. But when her father goes missing, Lauren must plunge into the rabbit hole of San Francisco’s Chinatown and confront a world both foreign and familiar. “King of the Yees” is a joyride across cultural, national and familial borders that explores what it means to truly be a Yee.
In his review of Lauren Yee’s earlier play “Crevice,” Robert Hurwitt of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “Yee has an acute ear for contemporary speech and applies a devilishly keen satiric eye to the manners and mores of her generation (and its parents).”

A former Dramatists Guild fellow, MacDowell fellow, Public Theater Emerging Writers Group member, Women’s Project Lab playwright, Second Stage Shank playwright-in-residence, Playwrights’ Center Core Writer and Playwrights Realm Page One playwright, Yee was nominated for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, L. Arnold Weissberger Award, and Outer Critics Circle’s John Gassner Award. She is a Ma-Yi Writers’ Lab member and holds commissions from Denver Center, Lincoln Center/LCT3, Mixed Blood, Portland Center Stage, South Coast Rep, and Trinity Rep. She currently lives in New York. She holds a B.A. from Yale and MFA from UCSD.

The Douglas Experience
A popular feature of the Kirk Douglas Theatre is The Lounge, where patrons can enjoy a cocktail before the show in the comfortable lobby of the theatre, and chat with the well-informed and engaging staff. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks can be taken into the seating area. (Many of the productions feature themed cocktails – Tiny Timtini for The Second City’s “A Christmas Carol: Twist Your Dickens!”)
Patrons are encouraged to come early and explore the interactive displays and activities in The Lounge that are specially crafted for each production. Past productions have included experiences as diverse as a photo booth where patrons could have their photo taken laughing alone with the salad of their choice (for “Women Laughing Alone with Salad”), a timeline showing the history of Chavez Ravine with an area left blank for patrons to add their own memories of Los Angeles (for “Chavez Ravine”), and an electric guitar in the historic ticket booth of the theatre for patrons to rock out with (for “The Black Suits”).
In addition, the productions have Stage Talks – post-show conversations in The Lounge facilitated by CTG’s knowledgeable and specially trained staff.

The Kirk Douglas Theatre is located at 9820 Washington Blvd. in Culver City.
Parking is free in the nearby Culver City’s City Hall garage, and a number of the restaurants within steps of the theatre offer exclusive discounts to Kirk Douglas Theatre ticket holders.
