Be L.A.’s Next SINGULAR SENSATION!
Ever Thought to Yourself, “I CAN DO THAT?”
Now’s Your Chance to Prove It.
“A Chorus Line” Online Talent Competition Now Available for Entries.

As the new national tour of the critically acclaimed production of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical “A Chorus Line” makes its way to Los Angeles, arriving at the Ahmanson Theatre May 21, the tour producers and Center Theatre Group have announced the “Be the One” online talent competition, which is now in progress.

To “Be the One,” L.A.’s “Singular Sensation,” visit the following website: www.CenterTheatreGroup.org/audition.  On the site, one can create an online audition profile, including video clips, photos, or a blog about why you deserve to “Be the One.”  The top 17 vote getters from the greater L.A. area will be invited to a live callback on Saturday, June 7 at Citadel Outlets on the I-5, just outside of downtown L.A.

At the live event, four men and four women will win a “Be the One” prize package which includes tickets to “A Chorus Line” at the Ahmanson Theatre and more.

These eight finalists will then be entered into the next round of contesting to compete against finalists from other cities on the “A Chorus Line” tour for the National Grand Prize: a trip to New York City including airfare and hotel accommodations, tickets to Broadway shows, backstage tours, show merchandise, meet and greets and more.  Plus, one individual will be crowned “L.A.’s Singular Sensation,” winning the local grand prize of $500.

Judges at the June 7 Citadel Outlets event will include Kay Cole (Maggie in the original Broadway production of “A Chorus Line”), Valarie Pettiford and Jane Lanier (both Tony Award nominees for their performances in the Broadway production of “Fosse”), Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Melissa Manchester, and Claudia Cagan (talent coordinator for E! Entertainment Television).

Two art lectures at DNJ Gallery

will highlight the Miracle Mile Art Walk

on Saturday, May 17, 2008

DNJ Gallery is pleased to announce two lectures that will be presented at DNJ Gallery, located at 154 1/2 N. La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles, on May 17th, 2008.  Both lectures take place in conjunction with the Miracle Mile Art Walk and Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Muse Art Walk. Admission is free.

On Collecting Photography by Andrew Schwartz at
11:00 A.M.
Andrew Schwartz will present a lecture on collecting photography which will include examples of the photographic medium from its inception to the present.  Mr. Schwartz is a former photo specialist at Sotheby's and was an assistant curator at the Jan Turner Gallery.  He has also been a member of the Modern and Contemporary Art Council and the Photo Art Council at the Los Angeles County Museum.  He has accumulated one of the most extensive photo collections in Los Angeles, including work by Alfred Stieglitz, Imogen Cunningham, Bernd and Hilla Becher and Richard Misrach.  Mr. Schwartz has given similar lectures in the past, most recently at Alex Haley Gallery in Gardena, CA.   He is currently a consultant to DNJ Gallery.

Joe Goode’s Art Talk and Walkthrough at
3:00 P.M.
Joe Goode will discuss his work in the exhibition "Ashes" which is on display at DNJ Gallery through May 24th.   "Ashes" is a culmination of three projects: "Burn Out!" --photographs of Goode's studio which was destroyed in a fire in 2005, "Study for Lost Paintings" –-small scale photographic studies of his last series of paintings before the fire, and "Lost Paintings" --large scale reproductions of his studies topped with layers of paint.  This show in particular revisits a curiosity Goode has always sought to examine—that of creation, destruction, and re-creation. It is a bold example of Goode's observations of life through art.

Deception

Playing in a Theatre Near You

"Are you free tonight?" A simple enough question, but how Jonathan McQuarry (EWAN McGREGOR) answers it will change his life forever. A corporate auditor adrift in a sea of New York's power elite, Jonathan's work is his entire life. But a chance meeting with Wyatt Bose (HUGH JACKMAN), a charismatic corporate lawyer, introduces Jonathan to a decadent playground for Manhattan's executive upper crust. For these power brokers, whose eighteen-hour workdays leave no time for a personal life, there's "The List" - a sex club, of sorts, where the right cell-phone number and four simple words ("Are you free tonight?") can lead to an evening's sexual fulfillment.
It's a world of "intimacy without intricacy," as Jonathan's first conquest (or vice versa) explains to him, and through The List Jonathan discovers a side of himself that he didn't know existed. But an affair with a ravishing and mysterious stranger known to Jonathan only by her first initial 'S' (MICHELLE WILLIAMS), will expose him to yet another world he never imagined - one of betrayal, treachery and murder.

Cultural Events in Los Angeles Magazine is the ONLY periodical dedicated exclusively to culture in L.A. area. The Magazine's Editor has recently asked "Should there be a periodical focused solely on culture in L.A.?"

These are some of the answers:

"Absolutely, at least one! There is plenty of culture here to write about."

Ed Asner

"I think so: yes! The Entertainment Capital of the World deserves it."

Dick Van Patten

Los Angeles has such an impact on culture it should have a magazine devoted to culture! The motion picture industry and television industry thus far, through their public relations departments, have failed to join forces with other arts. As far as culture is concerned, if we don’t re-establish the importance of culture in this country we won’t deserve to be as prosperous as we are and hold a leadership position in the world.

Carol Channing

"My instinct says that there shouldn’t be JUST ONE (periodical dedicated exclusively to culture). I think there certainly should be more than one because that is a very good topic and it’s something that the public is interested in. But there certainly should be AT LEAST ONE!

Dorian Harewood

"Oh sure, absolutely. There is plenty of culture here in Los Angeles, you just got to go look for it. (From the Editor: ...OR subscribe Cultural Events in Los Angeles Magazine!) Culture was always important and is even more important now."

Steve Kanaly
