New York Welcomes "Meet the Oscars®"

 

Oscar® fans in New York City will be the first to see the actual Oscars that will be presented to the Best Actor and Best Actress winners at the 84th Academy Awards® on Oscar Sunday, February 26. The statuettes will be part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Meet the Oscars, Grand Central" exhibition at Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal. The exhibition will open on Wednesday, February 22 at 10 a.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by 2010 Academy Award®-winning actress Melissa Leo ("The Fighter"). Public viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 23, through Sunday, February 26. Admission is free.

"Meet the Oscars, Grand Central" will give movie fans the opportunity to have their photo taken holding an actual Oscar statuette. Visitors also will be able to view the Actor in a Leading Role Oscar won by Michael Douglas for "Wall Street" (1987) as well as a display of statuettes in various stages of completion, as manufactured each year by R.S. Owens & Company in Chicago.

On Saturday, February 25, the Oscars designated for this year's Best Actor and Best Actress winners will make their way back to Hollywood, where they will be reunited with the rest of the statuettes to be presented on Oscar Night®.

Michael Douglas to Present
at 84th Academy Awards®

Two-time Academy Award® winner Michael Douglas will present at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today.

Douglas won an Oscar for his lead performance in "Wall Street" (1987) and a Best Picture award as a producer of "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975). His film credits include "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," "Solitary Man," "You, Me and Dupree," "Traffic," "Wonder Boys," "Falling Down," "Fatal Attraction" and "The China Syndrome."

Tina Fey to Present at 84th Academy Awards®

Tina Fey will present at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today.

Fey came to prominence as a regular on "Saturday Night Live" and currently stars in, produces and writes for the Emmy®-winning comedy series "30 Rock."  Her film credits include "Date Night," "Baby Mama" and "Mean Girls."  Fey recently became a best-selling author, with her memoir Bossypants having sold over one million copies.

Hollywood icons Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy will present at the 84th Academy Awards®, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today. This is the Muppets fifth appearance at the Academy Awards.

They are fresh off their triumphant critical and box office success in Disney's "The Muppets," which is Oscar nominated for Best Song, "Man or Muppet."

Troupe Will Pay Tribute to Hollywood's Biggest Night
with Its Largest Ensemble Cast Ever Assembled in One Act

 

Oscar® telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer have invited Cirque du Soleil to present a wholly unique and exclusive performance for the 84th Academy Awards, it was announced today. The one-time-only event will feature the largest Cirque cast ever assembled for a single act.

The performance will be accompanied by music by Academy Award®-nominated composer Danny Elfman, who scored the music for Cirque du Soleil’s IRIS, A Journey through the World of Cinema™. More than 50 international artists from Cirque du Soleil productions around the world will converge in Los Angeles on Oscar Sunday to bring the dynamic showcase to life.

The act marks the second time Cirque du Soleil has performed during an Academy Awards telecast. The troupe’s first appearance, at the 74th Academy Awards, sparked discussions about creating a permanent show at the Kodak Theatre and resulted in the creation of IRIS.

Stiller will be playing the title character in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," which he is also directing, and will be seen next in "Neighborhood Watch." Chris Rock to Present
at 84th Academy Awards®

Former Oscar host and Grammy-winning comedian, Chris Rock will present at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today.

In 2005 Rock served as host of the 77th Academy Awards.  He will be seen next in "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and "2 Days in New York."   Rock recently starred in the Tony nominated play "Mother F**ker with the Hat" and he lent his voice to the upcoming "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted."   His other film credits include "Grown Ups," "Death at a Funeral,"  "Good Hair," "Bee Movie" and the first two "Madagascar" animated films.

Wolfgang Puck to Create
2012 Governors Ball Menu

 

For the 18th consecutive year, master chef Wolfgang Puck has been selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to create the menu for the Governors Ball, the celebration immediately following the 84th Academy Awards® presentation on Oscar® Sunday, February 26, 2012.

"We are so excited to help create a new energy for the Governors Ball this year," said Puck. "With fantastic California ingredients, a few luxuries, and some favorite comfort foods, there will truly be something for everyone, and inspiration for anyone hosting a party at home. We are happy to celebrate Hollywood's brightest stars and most accomplished artists with our culinary artistry."

Wolfgang Puck Catering will serve the Academy's 1,500 Ball guests, including Oscar winners, nominees, presenters and telecast participants.

Emma Stone will present at the 84th Academy Awards® ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today. It will be her first time presenting on the show.

Stone appears in the Best Picture nominee "The Help." Her other film credits include "Crazy, Stupid, Love.," "Friends with Benefits," "Easy A" and "Superbad." She will be seen next in "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Gangster Squad."

Oscar Night® America 2012
to Benefit Charities Nationwide


On Sunday, February 26, charities in 49 cities will host official Oscar® viewing parties during the 84th Academy Awards® ceremony as part of Oscar Night America (ONA), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' grassroots outreach program.

The Academy sanctions charities across the country to host celebratory viewing parties on Oscar Night with proceeds directly benefiting the charities. All parties will feature the live broadcast of the Awards presentation; many will integrate Hollywood-style party elements, including red carpet arrivals, local celebrities, "paparazzi" photographers, predict-the-winner contests and live entertainment.

To set these parties apart from the thousands of other events taking place on Oscar Night, each ONA party receives from the Academy copies of the official commemorative poster and the official Oscar show program among other items.

Only one charity party in a given media market may participate in ONA. Events are entirely produced by local nonprofit organizations, with the active participation of the local ABC-TV affiliate station.

Last year 51 charities hosted viewing parties for the 83rd Academy Awards with 17,332 guests in attendance nationwide. More than $3.5 million was raised, all of it remaining in local communities. Since its inception in 1994, the program has generated nearly $33.5 million in funding for a wide spectrum of charitable organizations – every cent staying within the community where it was raised.

For the 19th consecutive year, Concept Marketing Development of Santa Barbara, California, will assist the Academy in coordinating the program.

PenÉlope Cruz to Make Oscar® Show Appearance
 

Academy Award® winner Penélope Cruz will present at the 84th Academy Awards® ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today.

Cruz won an Oscar in 2008 for her supporting role in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." She was also nominated for her lead performance in "Volver" (2006) and for her supporting role in "Nine" (2009). Her other film credits include "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "Sex and the City 2," "Sahara," "Vanilla Sky," "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" and "Blow."

Oscar®-Nominated Actors Step "Out of Character"
for Academy Portrait Exhibition

 

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present "Out of Character," a new exhibition featuring portraits of this year's acting nominees by photographer Douglas Kirkland. The exclusive new photos of 2011's Oscar-nominated performers will be on display starting Saturday, February 11, in the Academy's Grand Lobby Gallery in Beverly Hills.

Kirkland photographed all 20 of the Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress nominees in the two weeks since the January 24 nominations announcement. His distinctive, large-format portraits will be on display through March 18. An online gallery of these portraits, along with behind the scenes shots, will be spotlighted at www.oscar.com beginning today.

Following the exhibition, the portraits will become part of the Academy's Margaret Herrick Library photograph collection.

Kirkland has been capturing iconic images of motion picture luminaries for more than five decades, revealing as well as immortalizing such legends as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Orson Welles, Audrey Hepburn and Paul Newman. Also well known as a set photographer, he has worked on more than 100 films, including "The Sound of Music," "Out of Africa," "Titanic" and "Moulin Rouge." He recently traveled to Australia to serve as special set photographer on Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," scheduled for release in 2012.

"Out of Character" will be open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free. The Grand Lobby Gallery is located at the Academy's headquarters at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.

Angelina Jolie to Present
at 84th Academy Awards®
on Oscar® Sunday, February 26

 

Academy Award®-winning actress Angelina Jolie will present at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today.

In 1999 Jolie took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "Girl, Interrupted," and she received a nomination in 2008 for her lead performance in "Changeling." Jolie recently made her writing and directing debut with the film "In the Land of Blood and Honey." She will be seen next in "Maleficent." Jolie's other film credits include "Kung Fu Panda 2," "The Tourist," "Salt," "Wanted," "A Mighty Heart," "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," "Taking Lives" and "The Bone Collector."

Milla Jovovich to Host Academy's Sci-Tech Awards

 

Actress Milla Jovovich will host the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Scientific and Technical Awards on Saturday, February 11, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills. Jovovich will present 10 awards to 30 individual recipients during the evening.

Jovovich is the star of "The Fifth Element" and the "Resident Evil" franchise. She will next be seen in the feature "Resident Evil: Retribution."

Portions of the Scientific and Technical Awards presentation will be included in the Oscar® ceremony.

Oscar® Nominees to be Honored
at Awards Luncheon


Eighteen of the 20 nominees in the acting categories will be among more than 150 Oscar nominees who will gather at noon on Monday, February 6, at the Beverly Hilton when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honors this year's Oscar contenders at its annual Nominees Luncheon. Additional confirmations are expected to come in over the weekend.

 

From the Best Actress and Actor categories all the nominees – Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Rooney Mara, Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Demián Bichir, George Clooney, Jean Dujardin, Gary Oldman and Brad Pitt – are expected to attend. Kenneth Branagh, Jonah Hill, Nick Nolte, Max von Sydow, Bérénice Bejo, Melissa McCarthy, Janet McTeer and Octavia Spencer will represent the Supporting Actor and Actress categories.

 

Three of the five nominees in the Directing category – Michel Hazanavicius, Alexander Payne and Martin Scorsese – also are expected to attend.

Halle Berry to Present at 84th Academy Awards® on Oscar Sunday, February 26

 

Academy Award®-winning actress Halle Berry will present at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today.

Berry won an Oscar® in 2001 for her lead performance in "Monster’s Ball."  She was recently seen in "New Year’s Eve" and will be seen next opposite Tom Hanks and Hugh Grant in "Cloud Atlas."  Berry’s other film credits include "Frankie & Alice," "Things We Lost in the Fire," "Die Another Day," "Swordfish," and the first three "X-Men" films.

FINAL OSCAR® BALLOTS
MAILED TO ACADEMY MEMBERS

 

Final ballots for the 84th Academy Awards® were mailed today (February 1) to the 5,783 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Completed ballots must be returned to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) by 5 p.m. Tuesday, February 21.  Ballots received after the deadline will not be counted.

Listed on the ballots are nominees in 19 Awards categories.  Separate ballots for five categories (Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Animated Short Film and Live Action Short Film) will be distributed after verification of mandatory member attendance at screenings.

Following the tabulation of the votes, the winners’ names will be placed in sealed envelopes to be opened on Oscar Sunday, February 26.

Three-time Academy Award®-nominated actor Tom Cruise will present at the 84th Academy Awards® ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today.

Cruise was nominated for his lead performances in "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Jerry Maguire."  He also was nominated for his supporting role in "Magnolia." Cruise was recently seen in "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" and will be seen next in "Rock of Ages." His other film credits include "Tropic Thunder," "War of the Worlds," "Collateral," "Minority Report," "A Few Good Men," "Rain Man," "The Color of Money" and "Top Gun."

Hanks, who is a governor of the Academy, won consecutive Oscars® in 1993 and 1994 for his lead performances in "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump."  He was also nominated for his leading roles in "Big," "Saving Private Ryan" and "Cast Away."  Hanks can currently be seen in the Best Picture-nominated "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."  His other film credits include "Larry Crowne," "Toy Story 3," "Charlie Wilson's War," "The Da Vinci Code," "The Terminal," "Catch Me If You Can," "Road to Perdition," "Apollo 13" and "A League of Their Own."

Six actresses – Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig – from the hit comedy “Bridesmaids” will be presenters at the 84th Academy Awards, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today.  McCarthy received her first Oscar® nomination this year for her supporting role in the film, and Wiig also became a first-time nominee for the film’s original screenplay.   All six will be making their first Oscar show appearances.

84th Academy Awards® Nominations Announced

 

Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence.

Sherak and Lawrence, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead performance in “Winter’s Bone,” announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com.

Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Nominations ballots were mailed to the 5,783 voting members in late December and were returned directly to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the international accounting firm, for tabulation.

Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members this weekend at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area.

All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all categories, although in five of them – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film – members can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories.
