“THE DROWSY CHAPERONE” OPENS

JULY 9 AT AHMANSON THEATRE

Photo: Robert Dorfman and Georgia Engel in “Drowsy Chaperone.” Photo by Joan Marcus.

“The Drowsy Chaperone” – the most celebrated musical of the 2006 Broadway season –will open at the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, following a preview performance on Tuesday, July 8. Directed and choreographed by Tony Award® nominee Casey Nicholaw (“Spamalot”), with music and lyrics by Tony Award® winners Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and book by Tony Award® winners Bob Martin and Don McKellar, “The Drowsy Chaperone” will continue performances in a limited run through Sunday, July 20.

“The Drowsy Chaperone” tells the story of a modern day musical theatre addict known simply as Man in Chair. To chase his blues away he drops the needle on his favorite LP – the 1928 musical comedy, “The Drowsy Chaperone.” From the crackle of his hi-fi, the musical magically bursts to life onstage telling the tale of a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married, her producer who sets out to sabotage the nuptials, her chaperone, the debonair groom, the dizzy chorine, the Latin lover and a pair of gangsters who double as pastry chefs. In no time, the hi-jinks begin and the fun spins completely out of control.

Canadian actor Jonathan Crombie, who is widely known for playing Gilbert Blythe in the popular “Anne of Green Gables” movies, plays the musical-loving Man in Chair. Georgia Engel (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Everybody Loves Raymond”) will reprise her role of Mrs. Tottendale. Joining them are Cliff Bemis (Feldzieg), Andrea Chamberlain (Janet Van De Graaff), Robert Dorfman (Underling), Fran Jaye (Trix), Mark Ledbetter (Robert Martin), Marla Mindelle (Kitty), James Moye (Aldolpho), Nancy Opel (The Drowsy Chaperone), Paul Riopelle (Gangster #1), Peter Riopelle (Gangster #2) and Richard Vida (George). Rounding out the cast are Megan Nicole Arnoldy, Kevin Crewell, Jen Taylor Farrell, Tiffany Haas, Alicia Irving, Jody Madaras, Chuck Rea, Mason Roberts and Jennifer Swiderski.

The creative team for “The Drowsy Chaperone” features scenic design by Tony Award®-winner David Gallo, costume design by Tony Award®-winner Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Tony Award®-winner Ken Billington (“Chicago”) and Brian Monahan, sound design by Acme Sound Partners, orchestrations by Tony Award®-nominee Larry Blank, dance and incidental music arrangements by Glen Kelly, and music director/vocal arrangements by Phil Reno.

“The Drowsy Chaperone” is produced by Kevin McCollum, Roy Miller, Bob Boyett, Stephanie McClelland, Barbara Freitag and Jill Furman.

The Ahmanson Theatre is located at the Music Center of Los Angeles County, 135 N. Grand Avenue, in downtown L.A. Center Theatre Group is Los Angles’ preeminent non-profit theatre company.

“OF EQUAL MEASURE”

CAST SET FOR WORLD PREMIERE PLAY “OF EQUAL MEASURE” AT THE KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE

The cast is set and rehearsals have begun for the world premiere of the play “Of Equal Measure,” by Tanya Barfield, the final production of the Kirk Douglas Theatre’s 2007-2008 season. This revelatory world premiere drama, commissioned by Center Theatre Group, opens July 11, 2008, and continues through July 27. Previews begin June 29.

Directed by Leigh Silverman, the “Of Equal Measure” cast features (in alphabetical order) Christian Campbell, Dennis Cockrum, Scott Dawson, LisaGay Hamilton, Michael Hyland, Joseph C. Phillips, Lawrence Pressman, T. Ryder Smith, Christopher Warren and Michael T. Weiss.
The set design is by Richard Hoover and Sybil Wickersheimer, costume design is by Rachel Myers, lighting design is by Lap Chi Chu, sound design is by Adam Phalen, the projection design is by Jason H. Thompson and Kathryn Bostic is the composer. Casting is by Bonnie Grisan, and the production stage manager is Elizabeth Atkinson.
“Of Equal Measure,” set in World War I America, provides an illuminating perspective of the Woodrow Wilson presidency as viewed through the character of Jade Kingston (Lisa Gay Hamilton), an African American stenographer working in the White House. Jade witnesses first-hand the paradox of Wilson bringing the United States into the “Great War” in order that “the world be made safe for democracy,” while trampling civil rights at home by ordering the segregation of black federal employees and imprisoning individuals critical of the war effort. The effects that these actions have on Jade, her job, her family and her country fuel a compelling story that resonates socially and politically today.

Tickets for “Of Equal Measure” are on sale now and are available by calling (213) 628-2772, online at www.CenterTheatreGroup.org, in person at the Center Theatre Group box office at the Ahmanson Theatre or two hours prior to performances at the Kirk Douglas Theatre box office. The Kirk Douglas Theatre is located at 9820 Washington Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232.

“The House of Blue Leaves”

by John Guare

Directed by Nicholas Martin

Opens September 14. Runs through October 19, 2008.

Opening production of the new Mark Taper Forum, following a major interior renovation.

In the heartbreakingly human comedy “The House of Blue Leaves,” Artie, a zookeeper living in Sunnyside, Queens, desperately wants to escape his lower middle-class existence and become a popular singer and songwriter but his life is complicated by an ambitious mistress, Bunny, a crazy wife, Bananas, and a bomb-making, teenaged son, Ronnie.

In a society obsessed with success and infatuated with celebrity, Artie, Bunny and Ronnie are searching for fame and fortune, no matter how unrealistic their plans; Bananas would settle for love and acceptance. They have all bought into the myth that in this country wishes can be fulfilled. With a heady fusion of farce and tragedy, Guare gives a brilliant theatrical account of that very American dream gone sour.

“This Beautiful City”

Commissioned and Developed by The Civilians; Written by Steve Cosson and Jim Lewis; Music and Lyrics by Michael Friedman; Directed by Steve Cosson; Co-produced with New York’s Vineyard Theatre.

West Coast Premiere

Set in Colorado Springs at the base of the majestic Pike’s Peak, “This Beautiful City” is a new play with music that details the explosion of America’s evangelical Christian movement. Developed by the acclaimed theatre troupe The Civilians, “This Beautiful City” was created from fascinating and revealing interviews with church members, civic leaders, progressive activists and individuals from all walks of life in the Rocky Mountain town that has rapidly become the epicenter of the Evangelical movement. Colorado Springs has also become a microcosm of issues facing the country as a whole, such as the broad chasm between the religious right and the secular left and of the shifting line between religion and government as these churches increasingly wield power in the shaping of national policy.
