L.A. Nephrologists

A nephrologist is a physician trained in kidney diseases, kidney transplantation and dialysis therapies. In addition to three years of residency (hands on medical training) which is standard for all graduates of medical school, a nephrologist must train for another two years working with patients who have kidney disease. (It is optional, but at the end of his or her training a physician may choose to take a national exam and become a certified nephrologist. Some nephrologists may have even more special training including diagnostic procedures, dialysis access and kidney transplantation.)

Even though it isn't always the nephrologist who diagnoses a kidney disease; it is the nephrologist who prescribes the treatment. (Kidney disease may be caused by a number of conditions including high blood pressure and diabetes; the doctor may choose to prescribe a treatment for the underlying conditions.) It is the nephrologist's mission to slow down the progression of kidney disease; advise the patient about treatment options, and coordinate many aspects of patient's care, including dialysis treatments and transplant patient's care.
